The Importance of Managing Your Personal Brand

IMG_8388Everyone has a personal brand.  You are a brand if you do and a brand if you don’t! Our personal brand exists in the hearts and minds of everyone we come into contact with, such as our work colleagues, clients, community and networks.  Each person we meet forms an impression of who we are and what we or our organization / business / company can do for them.

The people we meet will quickly determine, through their perception of us, whether they like us, trust us, and want to do business with us.  That’s the power of personal branding and why it is important that we are able to clearly, consistently and authentically convey our personal brand.

A personal brand is the total experience of someone having a relationship with who you are and what you represent.  It is therefore important that you give some thought to your personal interactions – whether you are at a work meeting, a client meeting, a conference, a community fundraiser or a networking event.

We need to be mindful of what others are experiencing when they are around us.  Through our personal interactions, we are constantly being evaluated, assessed or judged – much like a job interview.

What is YOUR personal brand?  What is your personal brand is conveying to the people with whom you interact?  What impression are you leaving people with?  Is it the one you want them to have of you?

It is important that you are able to answer these questions because your personal brand is an asset that must be managed.  If you’re not controlling your brand, someone else is.  You must be the master of your own brand image rather than letting others define it for you.

Creating a cohesive personal brand can increase your self-confidence and connection with others, heighten your professional presence, and distinguish you from your competition – all pluses in the highly competitive business arena.

How then, can you define, communicate and master a powerful personal brand?

It begins with the story of YOU.  Your story includes the experiences that have defined you, the lessons you have learned, and the way those lessons have shaped your values and beliefs.  Once you understand the essence of your brand, you will be able to communicate it effectively to anyone you meet and integrate it into everything you do.

The result?  Adding value to those around you while enhancing your visibility and  credibility; always leaving a lasting and positive impression; and increasing your bottom line by simply being YOU.

Need clarity? Check in with people whom you trust and seek feedback regarding their perception of you, their experience of you, how they would describe YOU?  Then compare it to how you see yourself and whether you are accurately projecting the brand image you intend, and whether it is being received as you intended.

I recently received feedback from a friend/colleague/business partner whom I trust and who has always been able to honestly provide me with her feedback about what I do, how I do it, and her experience of why I do it.  Not only has she helped me to grow, but through her observations and experiences of me, has also helped to elevate me.  And for that, I am grateful!
