“It’s all about new beginnings, laying solid foundations and building strong relationships. Everything we want is in front of us!”  Unknown

Happy New Year! I hope you enjoyed a wonderful holiday break. My husband and I were blessed to spend time with each of our families over the holiday’s where we indulged in quality time together.  We also had time prior to ringing in 2018 to focus on the year ahead and establish our personal and professional goals. For us, it is not about establishing our “resolutions” for the New Year,  but rather, acknowledging our successes and challenges in 2017, and then clearly establishing our vision for a happy, productive and prosperous 2018.

One of my goals for 2018 is quite common – I want to increase the size of my business.  I have broken this goal down into smaller, specific parts to help me reach it.  At the heart of this goal is one simple thing:  relationships. I highly value this goal because relationships are at the core of business success.

As you establish your goals and priorities for 2018, I encourage you to consider the impact of your personal interactions.  How we communicate and the way treat others effects our relationships. If you want your business or career to advance, you have to nurture the relationships you currently have and create opportunities to build new ones.  Here are five key considerations for building positive relationships to ensure your success in 2018:

1.  Respect Others

Respect for another person entails listening to their opinions, paying attention to their feelings, being mindful of their time, and being aware of their physical space. At the core of respect for others is the “golden rule” – do unto others as you would have them do unto you.  Rank or hierarchy do not matter – each person with whom you interact is important and deserves utmost respect.

2.  Listen

When having a conversation with others, strive to be genuinely interested in them. Ask questions and actively listen to their answers. Use this as an opportunity to get to know the person.  This is your chance to establish a foundation and rapport.  By actively listening to another person during a conversation, you are acknowledging and reinforcing what they are saying.  This level of focus will make the person feel like he or she is being heard, which in turn will make the person feel special. The act of listening takes work. Instead of focusing on what we want to say and our own needs, good listening requires that our attention go to others. By doing so, we demonstrate that we value others before ourselves.

3.  Be Polite

Words that will never go out of style in any business or social situation:  please, thank you, you’re welcome, excuse me, and I’m sorry.  Use them, and use them often.  Such words are noticed and appreciated by those with whom you interact and will always have a positive impact.

4.  Speak Kindly

Words of kindness can inspire others, lift their spirits, and encourage them to pass such behaviour on to others.  It is contagious.  Do not participate in idle complaints or gossip.  They destroy relationships.  Remember what your parents taught you:  if you can’t say anything nice, don’t say anything at all.

5.  Be Considerate

Being considerate of others helps to ensure that you are making them feel comfortable and at ease.  Being considerate is about being mindful of another person’s feelings and making the effort to help them feel welcomed, included, important and valued. Make an effort to be considerate every single day and watch how your relationships will flourish.

I wish each of you incredible success through the relationships you build in 2018!
