Nurture Your Business Relationships

Have you considered the impact your personal interactions have upon those with whom you interact?  How we communicate and the way treat others impacts our relationships.  If you want your business to grow,  you have to nurture the business relationships you currently have and create opportunities to build new ones.  Here are five key considerations for building positive relationships that can help to foster your success:

1.  Respect Others

Respect for another person entails listening to their opinions, paying attention to their feelings, being mindful of their time, and being aware of their physical space. At the core of respect for others is the “golden rule” – do unto others as you would have them do unto you.  Rank or hierarchy do not matter – each person with whom you interact is important and deserves utmost respect.

2.  Listen

When having a conversation with others, strive to be genuinely interested in them. Ask questions and actively listen to their answers. Use this as an opportunity to get to know the person, establish a foundation and build rapport.  By actively listening to another person during a conversation, you are acknowledging and reinforcing what they are saying.  This level of focus will make the person feel like he or she is being heard, which in turn will make the person feel special. The act of listening takes work. Instead of focusing on what we want to say and our own needs, active listening requires that our attention go to others. By doing so, we demonstrate that we value others before ourselves.

3.  Be Polite

Words that will never go out of style in any business or social situation:  please, thank you, you’re welcome, excuse me, and I’m sorry.  Use them, and use them often.  Such words are noticed and appreciated by those with whom you interact and will always have a positive impact.

4.  Speak Kindly

Words of kindness can inspire others, lift their spirits, and encourage them to pass such behaviour on to others.  It is contagious.  Do not participate in idle complaints or gossip.  They destroy relationships.  Remember what your parents taught you:  if you can’t say anything nice, don’t say anything at all.

5.  Be Considerate

Being considerate of others helps to ensure that you are making them feel comfortable and at ease.  Being considerate is about being mindful of another person’s feelings and making the effort to help them feel welcomed, included, important or valued. Make an effort to be considerate every single day and watch how your relationships will flourish.

Practice these tips to enhance your personal interactions, better connect with others, and ensure your business growth and success.
